What is the JR Hokkaido Pass?

The JR Hokkaido Pass is a discounted rail pass exclusively for foreign visitors. It grants unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido trains (except the bullet train) for a set number of consecutive days, making it an affordable way to explore the entire island, from bustling Sapporo to scenic train stations like Asahikawa.

Things to know before booking your JR Hokkaido Pass

  • The JR Hokkaido Pass grants access to JR Hokkaido trains throughout Hokkaido (excluding Shinkansen bullet trains). 
  • The pass comes in 3 options: 5 days, 7 days, or 10 days of consecutive travel. Select the duration that best suits your exploration timeframe. 
  • There are no blackout dates for the JR Hokkaido Pass
  • Children aged twelve and above are considered adults. A maximum of two infants who are five years of age or younger may be accompanied free of charge by an adult or child pass holder. There will be extra charges incurred for more than two infants accompanying the pass holder.
  • Choose your desired activation date within the pass's validity period.
  • The passes are not valid on buses, non-JR trains, or other non-JR Hokkaido-operated transportation.
  • As long as it remains valid, you can use this pass as often as you like. It only needs to be activated once at the beginning. It is not required to have it stamped at every station.
  • The pass can be used unlimited times, provided it is used during its allotted time of validity.
  • Passholders are required to always have their passports on them for verification.
  • Passes are only available to foreign tourists visiting Japan on a temporary visa.

5-Day Hokkaido adventure:

  • Day 1

Arrive in Sapporo, check into your hotel, and explore the lively Susukino district for dinner.

  • Day 2

Visit the Sapporo Beer Museum and Odori Park. In the afternoon, take the train to Hakodate, which takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Explore the Motomachi district and enjoy the Hakodate Millions Night View from Mount Hakodate.

  • Day 3

In the morning, take a train back to Sapporo (1 hour, 30 minutes) and head to Otaru (30 minutes). Stroll along the picturesque Otaru Canal, shop for local crafts on Sakaimachi Street, and visit the Otaru Music Box Museum

Go on a 1 hour 15 minutes train ride to Noboribetsu and spend the day relaxing in the onsens, or therapeutic hot springs. Explore the dramatic Jigokudani geothermal landscape.

Relax and enjoy the onsen experience in Noboribetsu. In the afternoon, return to Sapporo by train and depart from Hokkaido.

Travel to Asahikawa, which takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes, and visit the renowned Asahiyama Zoo, known for its innovative animal enclosures.

It takes 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Biei by train. Explore the picturesque Biei and Furano region, known for its stunning lavender fields in summer (timing permitting), and visit the Blue Pond. In the afternoon, travel to Furano (30 minutes).

Enjoy scenic hikes or other outdoor activities in the Furano area. In the afternoon, return to Sapporo by train via Asahikawa; the total travel time is 4 hours and 10 minutes.
